Mr. Joseph Allen Pitner Jr.

Joseph Allen Pitner, Jr. was born on September 12, 1959, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Joe and Gaynelle Pitner. He passed away on August 1, 2023. He is survived by his wife, Mary Shapard Pitner, son, Michael Scott Pitner, daughter, Martha Amelia Pitner Schettler, daughter-in-law Aleck Pitner, son-in-law Jake Schettler, grandson, Truett Allen Pitner, granddaughter, Nolen Elizabeth Pitner, a brother, David Pitner, sister-in-law Kendra Pitner, sister-in-law Peggy Shapard Stubblefield, brother-in-law, Tim Stubblefield, niece Megan Stubblefield Houck (husband Casey Houck), nephew TJ Stubblefield (wife Becca Stubblefield), nephew Joe Weston Pitner, an aunt Lyda Zyck, and beloved cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Gaynelle Pitner, grandparents, and nephew Garner Pitner. In addition to his family, he is survived by many friends, gathered and cherished from childhood throughout his adult life, many of whom are truly lifelong friends Allen graduated from Shelbyville Central High School and received a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee. Allen worked at Gresham, Smith and Partners as a senior traffic engineer, was co-owner and President of Economy Pen & Pencil Company/JO-BEE, the Chief Executive Officer of the Shelbyville-Bedford County Chamber of Commerce, and his last interest and something he was becoming very passionate about was as Membership Director for the South Central Tennessee Tourism Association. Allen volunteered as a Big Brother during college in Knoxville, and recently started being an advocate for children through Casa. He was a former Board Member/Chairman of Workforce Solutions for over 17 years. Allen was a Board Member of the Shelbyville Municipal Planning Commission for over 14 years, a member of the Shelbyville Municipal Airport Authority for 22 years, chairman of the Bedford County Railroad Authority for 10 years, and a member of the Bedford County Election Commission for several years. He served as president of the Promotional Products Association of the Mid-South (PPAMS) in 2010 and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2020 He was currently serving on different boards of directors including the Habitat for Humanity Board and the Shelbyville Arts Council. Allen also enjoyed Tennessee Vol sports, acting in plays, and learned how to play different instruments in his adulthood, first re-learning guitar from a 50th birthday present from Mary, then the banjo and mandolin. Allen was called Big Al from his college days, and the name stuck when he became a granddaddy to Truett and Nolan. That became his favorite role. Although he decided early on that retirement was not for him, he did not let his new job interfere with his Wednesday play dates with the grands and GrandMary. Allen would be honored with memorials to the Shelbyville Bedford Public Library, 220 Jefferson Street, Shelbyville, TN 37160, (931-684-7323) and/or Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 122, Shelbyville, TN 37162, (931-684-4300). Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel. Pastor Jason Scales will officiate, with burial to follow in Willow Mount Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 4-8 PM Friday at the funeral home.
