Doris Marie Stokes McCord, 87, of Shelbyville, died Sunday, August 28, 2016, following a long illness. She had been a resident of Carriage House since October 2015. For the previous 21 years, she had lived in her home on S. Brittain St. in Shelbyville. A Celebration of Life event will be held in October when her family, who live a considerable distance, can gather in Shelbyville. As per her wishes, she will be cremated. She was born in Shelbyville on October 28, 1928, the only child of the late William Pruitt Stokes and the late Margaret Higgins Stokes. A 1946 graduate of Shelbyville Central High School, she attended Huntington College and Middle Tennessee State University. As an administrative social worker in Louisville, KY, she spent her professional life helping many specific populations. Among those were incarcerated juvenile offenders; impoverished urban citizens enrolled in work force education programs; and displaced homemakers seeking basic education. She served also as a Federal regional director of a program created by President Reagan to bring to the U.S., and to provide basic education and job training for thousands of the half-Vietnamese children of war-era American servicemen. She retired in 1991, returning to Shelbyville to care for her mother. Preceding her in death was her son, Michael D. McCord. Survivors include her daughter, Victoria McCord of Shelbyville; grandchildren Jennifer Collins (Graham) of Ashland, OR, and Ward Ransom (Wendy) of Los Angeles; great-grandchildren alder Collins and Josey Collins of Ashland, OR; first cousins Mary Battle Higgins Thompson and Eugene B. Higgins, Jr. of Nashville, Walter Higgins of Boca Raton, FL, and Bob Higgins of Olympia, WA. Memorials may be made to the: Building Fund of the Shelbyville-Bedford County Library, 220 Jefferson St., Shelbyville, TN 37160. Feldhaus Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
