Mrs. Susan Thompson Derryberry

July 1, 1930 - January 20, 2020

Susan Thompson Derryberry, 89, of Shelbyville died peacefully surrounded by family in Murfreesboro on January 20, 2020. She was born July 1, 1930 in Lee County, Alabama to William A. and Mildred I. Thompson. She lived throughout the South in Jackson, Mississippi, Charlotte, North Carolina, Macon, Georgia, and Nashville, Tennessee. She received a B.A. in History from Vanderbilt University,and was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She married Dr. John S. Derryberry, a family physician in 1952. They moved to Shelbyville where they had three daughters, Susan, Anne, and Martha. She served as Chairman of United Way, an Elder of First Christian Church, and as Treasurer of the Shelbyville-Bedford County Library Board, in addition to other community and social organizations. Together with her husband, she served on a medical mission trip to Tansen, Nepal. She was an avid reader, who also enjoyed traveling, knitting, and spending time with her family. She is preceded in death by her grandson Thaddeus, husband of 46 years, John, brother William, and daughter Anne. She is survived by her daughter Susan (Bill) Bounds of Dallas, Texas, son-in-law Daryl Carter of Lexington, Kentucky, and daughter Martha (James) Condra of Birmingham, Alabama, as well as her grandchildren Bill (Caroline) Bounds, Charlotte, NC, India (Houston) Munroe of Austin, TX, Adam Condra of Tuscaloosa, AL, Mitchell (Curtis) Rutherford, of Birmingham, AL, Lesley Carter of Lexington, KY, Elizabeth Condra of Birmingham, Maren Condra of Birmingham and four great-grandchildren, Amelia and Bill Bounds, Peter and Leo Rutherford. Visitation will be held 10 am Saturday, January 25th at First Christian Church with the funeral service to follow at 11 am, officiated by Jared Ruari. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First Christian Church, Shelbyville-Bedford County Library, or Alive Hospice, Murfreesboro. Feldhaus Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
